Abstract

As 2026 began, China’s construction machinery industry has kicked off a “war without gun smoke”. From competing for overseas orders and racing domestic production capacity to pursuing technological innovation and local deep cultivation, leading enterprises are fiercely competing in the global market. Pressure from cutthroat competition at home is turning into a strong driving force for going global.

In January–February, China’s total export of construction machinery hit $10.686 billion, surging 33.4% year on year! This remarkable result reflects years of steady efforts by leading Chinese firms to expand and invest overseas.

Order Competition: The Race Behind Billion-Yuan Deliveries

The first quarter saw a robust start-up boom in the construction machinery sector, with delivery activity reaching new heights of competition:

  • XCMG: Nearly 30 cranes led by its “world’s largest crane”, 80 new energy heavy-duty trucks, over 100 sanitation machines, and hundreds of excavators and loaders (total value exceeding 100 million yuan) and other high-end equipment lined up for construction sites at home and abroad.
  • SANY: Secured orders worth hundreds of millions of yuan at the Saudi Heavy Machinery Exhibition. On the first full working day after the Spring Festival, 151 sets of pumping and road equipment worth 124 million yuan in total, along with many cranes and excavators, were shipped worldwide.
  • Zoomlion: Over 15,000 sets of lifting machinery, concrete machinery, agricultural machinery, emergency equipment, new materials and other products were delivered to domestic and overseas markets, with a total value of 8.5 billion yuan.
  • Shandong Lingong: Achieved strong growth across global markets, with batch deliveries of electric loaders and excavators. Its electric products entered Nepal in large quantities, and it won major orders at the Las Vegas exhibition, with on-site contracts exceeding 1,000 units.

Behind this order-driven competition are rising overseas demand and the strengthened competitiveness of Chinese manufacturing.

From “Product Exports” to “Industrial Globalization”

The core logic of going global has fundamentally shifted. Leading Chinese construction machinery makers are achieving a qualitative leap in their global footprints.

  • On March 18, Zoomlion officially opened Phase I of its intelligent aerial work platform factory in Hungary, producing high-end, smart products tailored to European demand. It marks the company’s accelerated integration into the global industrial ecosystem via a “1+N” manufacturing and service model, further strengthening production, R&D and service capabilities in Europe.
  • Sunward Intelligent also made a breakthrough in Europe. In March, its European subsidiary reached a cooperation deal with major European rental firm KILOUTOU, winning a large order for over 100 machines and officially entering Europe’s high-end rental market. The equipment will be integrated into KILOUTOU’s rental network, boosting brand penetration and influence in Europe.
  • SANY Group achieved a major supply chain breakthrough: its Dubai supply center went operational in January, covering 72 countries and regions across the Middle East and Africa, and is expected to cut overall parts delivery time by 35%. It will serve as a key strategic hub for SANY’s globalization and overseas supply chain capacity.
  • On March 3, XCMG signed a strategic cooperation memorandum with Codelco in Chile, a key step to deepen its presence in South America and better serve major global mining clients.
  • Lingong Heavy Machinery targeted the high-end North American market. Its Mexico plant rolled out EU-standard core aerial work platforms — the AR14J-2 diesel and A13JE-2 electric articulated boom lifts — which meet international high-end market access standards and hold CE and other authoritative certifications. This marks solid progress in optimizing global production layout and upgrading overseas manufacturing capacity.

Tech Upgrading: Competition from “Manufacturing” to “Smart Manufacturing”

Behind orders and global layouts lies deeper competition in technology.

  • XCMG won intent orders from multiple North American dealers at the CONEXPO-CON/AGG exhibition with innovative intelligent interactive technologies.
  • SANY displayed four full-scenario solutions for mining, ready-mix construction, road construction and lifting at the Saudi exhibition.
  • Zoomlion’s Earth-moving Machinery Park in its Smart Industrial City can efficiently produce more than 100 excavator models on one production line, rolling out one excavator every 6 minutes on average.

Local adaptation has become a new competitive focus. Many firms optimized equipment for high-temperature and dusty environments in the Middle East, enabling stable operation at 60°C. Zoomlion’s ZE215G excavator delivered to Singapore was customized for local fuel conditions and workloads. Such deep adaptation is becoming key to seizing overseas markets.

To tackle strict European and American markets, electrification and smart technologies have become core strengths for Chinese construction machinery. Earlier this year, LiuGong won a $120 million order for electric equipment in Vietnam, marking Chinese electric construction machinery’s entry into Southeast Asia’s heavy industry core market. Independently developed super-large intelligent tower cranes, tunnel boring machines and other high-end equipment have successfully entered high-end European and American markets, breaking the long-term monopoly of Western firms.

In fact, this intense competition has no real winners or losers. It reflects technology-driven innovation, upgraded services and strengthened international competitiveness. The overall strength of China’s construction machinery industry keeps rising amid fierce rivalry.

Challenges remain, including trade barriers, technical standard restrictions and exchange rate fluctuations. Yet one thing is certain: globalization has become a pillar for China’s construction machinery industry to counter cyclical volatility and achieve sustainable development.
