Abstract
The data for the first quarter of 2026 has provided the answer: excavator sales reached 73,336 units, up 19.5% year-on-year, including 33,757 units exported, a surge of 36.1% year-on-year; loader sales hit 38,325 units, up 25.4% year-on-year, with 19,648 units exported, rising 38.5% year-on-year.
As export volumes have outpaced domestic sales for months running and overseas markets have become the core engine of growth, China's construction machinery sector has reached a decisive watershed in its global expansion—one that marks a shift from quantitative growth to qualitative transformation.
So, who will be the real "winners" in this watershed battle of 2026?
Convergence of Domestic and Global Cycles, Surging Demand
China's construction machinery industry is now at the intersection of resonating domestic and overseas demand.
- Domestically: As the 15th Five-Year Plan kicks off, major infrastructure projects such as the Yajiang Hydropower Station, the Xinjiang-Tibet Railway, and the High-Speed Railway Along the Yangtze River are accelerating, providing solid support for domestic demand. Meanwhile, the industry is entering a new round of concentrated replacement cycles, where renewal demand will serve as an even stronger underpinning force. The domestic market is thus experiencing a resonance of new and replacement demand.
- Overseas: Global mining capital expenditure is on an upward trajectory—forecasts suggest cumulative growth of about 50% in global mining capital spending from 2024 to 2030. Approximately 75% of Africa's excavator demand stems from mining for copper, gold, lithium, and other minerals. Emerging markets along the Belt and Road, as well as in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, continue to see robust infrastructure and urbanization needs. The financial reports of Caterpillar and Komatsu confirm this trend: booming mining in Africa, cyclical recovery in Europe and the United States, and ample order backlogs for enterprises.
Enterprise "Qualitative Transformation": From Product Exports to Local Deep Cultivation
The evolution of corporate competitiveness is the true foundation for going global. In recent years, leading Chinese construction machinery enterprises have achieved rapid growth in overseas businesses, with rising overseas revenue shares driving overall profitability.
- Sany Heavy Industry: In 2025, it recorded 55.86 billion yuan in international main business revenue, up 15.1% year-on-year, accounting for 64% of total revenue. The gross profit margin of international business stood at 31.6%, significantly higher than the 20.7% for domestic business.
- XCMG: In the first three quarters of 2025, overseas revenue reached 37.594 billion yuan, accounting for 48.1% of total revenue, a year-on-year increase of 2.3 percentage points.
- Zoomlion: In 2025, overseas revenue hit 30.515 billion yuan, up 30.52% year-on-year, with its revenue share climbing to 58.56%. Its overseas revenue posted a compound annual growth rate of 52% over the past four years.
- Shantui: In 2025, overseas business revenue reached 8.741 billion yuan, up 17.94% year-on-year, accounting for as high as 59.79% of total revenue, with 13 overseas subsidiaries.
More importantly, the profitability of overseas businesses has generally surpassed that of domestic ones—Sany's overseas gross profit margin is about 11 percentage points higher than domestic, and Zoomlion's is nearly 6 percentage points higher. This pattern of simultaneous growth in volume and price means Chinese enterprises are no longer followers competing on low prices, but are evolving into value leaders in the global industrial chain.
Technology-Driven: Electrification Opens a Path to High-End Breakthrough
Electrification is the core technological lever for China's construction machinery to overtake competitors. In recent years, the electrification rate of loaders and concrete mixers in China has exceeded 50%, and penetration of electric products is expected to accelerate further amid high oil prices. Kaiyuan Securities notes that the breakthrough in electrification of loaders and concrete mixers signals the basic maturity of construction machinery battery, motor, and electronic control (three-electric) technologies, paving the way for further iteration into intelligent and unmanned operations.
Electrification is not only a leap in product competitiveness but also a key to unlocking high-end European and American markets. Against the backdrop of increasingly stringent carbon emission rules, China's first-mover advantage in electric construction machinery is translating into global competitive edge. In 2025, China's market share in construction machinery in Europe jumped from 16.59% to 35.61%.
Yet the path to global expansion is never smooth. On March 30, the UK Trade Remedies Authority launched an anti-absorption review investigation into imported excavators originating from China, less than a year after imposing anti-dumping duties of 18.81% to 40.08% in May 2025. In mid-April, the European Commission further ramped up countervailing duties on Chinese aerial work platforms, with the maximum rate soaring to 66.7%.
Thoughtfully, such trade barriers have not slowed China's construction machinery exports—excavator export growth still hit 36.1% in the first quarter. The competitiveness of Chinese products has upgraded from price advantages to technological and quality strengths.
Can the high export growth sustain? Will trade barriers escalate further? Can the first-mover advantage in electrification turn into a lasting moat? These questions may be answered in 2026. But one thing is certain: for China's construction machinery industry, 2026 marks a new journey from a higher starting point. The real winners will be those enterprises that master core technologies, deploy deeply globally, and possess full value chain capabilities in the global industrial chain.
